Our Dogs

Hearing Dog puppies are sourced from all over New Zealand, from private owners, breeders and even rescue centres. The dogs do not have to be pedigree. They do need to be friendly, outgoing, intelligent and really interested in sounds. These dogs change the lives of their recipient, reducing isolation and giving a new freedom. The dogs love to work!

How do we train a Hearing Dog?

We make training fun for our dogs by using reward based training. This means we base our training around games, treats and fuss. A Hearing Dog puppy sees their training as a fun and exciting activity, rather than a chore. Click below to find out more about the National Training Center for Hearing Dogs.

Training Centre

Hearing Dogs Training Centre is situated just 5 minutes’ drive from the New Plymouth CBD. Based in a beautiful rural setting alongside a river and public bush walk, the Centre incorporates a large, fully fenced, free run area.

The Training Centre is made up of five separate buildings including the training house which is a 'simulated' house where the trainee Hearing Dogs come each day to learn how to alert recipients to the sounds in the home. The Office, Kennels, Garage and the Recipient Cottage where recipients come to stay while they get to know their dog and learn how to get their dog working to sounds.
